When in doubt

So, I received my final marks for the Qualifying Exam 1 last night.

We all know that I didn’t make it.

You cannot imagine my heartbreaking disappointment, when I opened the letter and saw that my average [you need a 50% average for the 2 consecutive 5 hour papers written in March], was in fact a D.

A D, ladies and gents, meaning, I got around 40-49%.

***

Allow that to sink in.

***

This is a test that costs R2,500 to write. It is a prerequisite for the second Qualifying Exam, which is written in November. An exam I will not be able to write this year.

This is a test that one needs to travel to go write. And pay for over-night lodgings.

This is a test, that takes away all of your nights, spent pouring over books and doing questions. One question taking anything from 1 to 5 hours to complete.

That 2-9% has taken away another year of my life. And a large chunk of my going-overseas cash money.

***

Tell me something beautiful.

Sometimes life really sticks it in and breaks it off.

Something beautiful: Renoir's "Dance at the Moulin de La Galette" with pixie wings, flying around a beautiful sunset while leaving a trail of blossoming silver roses with malt-liquor dew drops.

Oh, I'm so sorry Chei. But you're not the first and you won't be the last to fail the test. As my mom always says 'everyone falls on their bum sometimes'.

Keep at it. In the mean time, something beautiful: "Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art... It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things that give value to survival." - C. S. Lewis

No!
You are so smart, that test can't quantify the quickness of your logic and coolness of point of view.

Don't let it take you down, friend. You'll be OK. You have more equipment upstairs...
Isn't there an apeals process that could give you a plus/minus of a few points? The Bar exams here in the States avtually have an apeal board that if you present that you know most of what you got wrong on the test, you get exactly that tolerance on your score. Hope and good will, I know. Awefully insubstantial, but I offer it anyway.

Sigh. I'm very sorry to hear this. You know every country has its way of testing and it sounds like yours sucks. We take 11 exams but its only the final case study where you have to wait 6 months for your next sitting.

Ok Neko - pull up those socks. Do you have any idea how many top rated accountants in my office actually failed exams this year? Well...1/3 of my qualifying exam group failed.

You are not alone. And it means nothing about your intelligence - often its simply exam technique.

Don't forget technique. Stick to your time. And, you will make it next time.

Remember: you could not be where you are if you were not the cream of the crop of those who applied for a job.

Hang in there...it happens to everyone at some time and it means nothing about our worth.

Beautiful but related thought:

We do not show our character by whether we pass or fail, but we develop and demonstrate character by what we do when we do (inevitably) meet failure in our lives.
